As Above, So Below: The Nested Loop of Reality

Pixel art of a glowing purple spiral galaxy orb with golden orbital rings surrounded by sparkling stars on a dark background.

I believe reality is fundamentally cyclical and recursive — that everything repeats, not just in patterns of behavior or history, but structurally, at the level of being itself.

If we zoomed infinitely into the smallest particles — past atoms, past quarks, into the unknown — I don’t think we’d find nothingness. I think we’d find somewhere..else. Maybe the depths of space. Maybe the deepest parts of the ocean. Or… perhaps… another time? Or Maybe all, folded into each other.

Now flip the table, if we kept traveling far enough outward, past what we can observe, I think we’d loop back around and find ourselves in the same situation, we’d be… somewhere or sometime else.

The universe literally folds in on itself — a Möbius strip, a spiral with no real beginning or end.

This suggests the smallest components of matter aren’t just parts of the universe. They contain the blueprint of it. Each particle isn’t a speck lost in the cosmos — it’s a microcosm of the cosmos itself. A spiral inward and outward at once. Space can become the ocean. Oceans can be somewhere in a particle. And that particle? could be someones entire universe…

꩜ This Isn’t New — It’s Ancient

Before going further, I want to name what this actually is, because I think it’s stronger standing on its real ancestry than borrowing someone else’s vocabulary to sound credible.

This is Hermetic. The line “as above, so below” comes from the Emerald Tablet, one of the oldest continuously-referenced texts in Western esoteric thought — the founding claim of hermeticism, alchemy, and a huge lineage of mystical philosophy stretching back thousands of years. The idea that the macrocosm and microcosm mirror each other, that the pattern governing the largest scale of existence is the same pattern governing the smallest, isn’t a fringe intuition. It’s one of the oldest continuously-held beliefs about the structure of reality that humans have ever produced.

What follows is my own extension of that tradition —

꩜ Let’s Break It Down

To unpack this, I’m going to use metaphor — but not loosely. The comparisons between space, ocean, and particle are literal. They’re an attempt to reveal something about structure, motion, and self-similarity that keeps reappearing at every scale humans have ever looked closely at.

When we look deep into space, past the illusion of emptiness, we begin to see movement — fluid, organic, almost aquatic. Nebulas drift like cosmic jellyfish. Galaxies swirl in spirals, arms stretching like tendrils. The further out we go, the more space behaves like a vast, dynamic ocean — alive with unseen motion, full of flow, full of depth.

Now turn inward. A single drop of that ocean is not stillness but another kind of motion — countless tiny worlds moving in patterns that echo the cosmos surrounding them. The deep sea and deep space begin to mirror each other. The ocean becomes a map of matter itself.

And there’s a real, documented version of this same mirroring at an entirely different scale: when astronomers map the large-scale structure of the universe — galaxy clusters strung together by filaments of gas and dark matter, separated by vast cosmic voids — the resulting map looks like a neural network. Researchers have directly compared images of the cosmic web to networks of neurons, and the resemblance is close enough that it’s been studied seriously, not dismissed as coincidence.

Here’s where I part ways with how that research usually gets framed. The standard line is that this is structural resemblance without deeper meaning — two different things that happen to look alike because efficient networks converge on similar shapes. I don’t think it’s coincidence, and I don’t think it’s “just” resemblance. I think the universe is quite literally a nervous system, recursing at scale — the same structure, the same activity, the same thing, happening at the size of neurons and happening again at the size of galaxies, because scale is not a wall that separates one kind of thing from another. A pattern that shows up identically at every size you look isn’t decorating two unrelated systems. It’s one system, looking at itself from a different distance. The universe isn’t like a brain. I think it is one — conscious of itself, thinking itself, at every scale it exists at, ongoing.

That’s the whole thread this piece is actually about. Not physics borrowing mysticism’s language, or mysticism borrowing physics’s credibility. Just scale, recursing, everywhere, always — the same pattern, the same aliveness, appearing at every size because it was never actually different sizes of different things. It was one thing, seen from wherever you happen to be standing.

꩜ What About Consciousness?

None of the structure above means much without asking who’s observing it.

If every particle carries the pattern of the whole, maybe particles aren’t just building blocks. Maybe awareness isn’t something that switches on inside a skull once a brain gets complicated enough. Maybe it’s already present, everywhere, in some form, and a brain doesn’t manufacture it so much as tune into it — the way a radio doesn’t create the song, it resolves one frequency out of a spectrum that was already playing.

That reframes the whole observer question. We aren’t outside the universe, watching it. We’re inside it, made of it, and if it’s aware, then we’re part of a living system seeing itself through us. Not watching it unfold. But Being the unfolding.

꩜ Infinity & Beyond

All roads seem to circle back to the same paradox: infinity.

Everything is infinite because there’s nothing beyond it — all matter, energy, thought, space, time, every possible variable, with no outside and therefore no boundary. Nothing is infinite for the identical reason, in reverse — no content, no properties, no border, and therefore no end either. Opposite conditions collapsing into the same boundlessness.

When you total every force, positive and negative, visible and unseen, the result is zero — not emptiness, but equilibrium. A self-balancing system. A loop of infinite potential where dualities arise, interact, and dissolve, endlessly. What you experience as life is a small fracture in that balance — a slight asymmetry that allows motion, change, choice. Consciousness is how the system explores itself from the inside. You aren’t separate from that process. You’re the equation in motion. The still point, made aware of itself.

꩜ The Nested Loop — No Floor, No Ceiling

Here’s where the whole shape comes together, and it’s the part I think is truest to what I actually believe, more than any single metaphor along the way.

It isn’t that every scale is an identical, resized copy of the one before it, the way a strict fractal repeats the same pattern smaller and smaller forever. It’s that every particle, every scale, contains its own somewhere — shaped by whatever that particular particle happens to carry. Zoom into one and you don’t find a smaller copy of the same universe. You find a specific elsewhere, unrepeated, unique to what that particle is. Leibniz described something structurally close to this centuries ago — the idea that reality is built from countless individual points, each one a complete world reflecting the whole, but from its own unrepeatable vantage, angled and colored by its own particular nature. Not one master pattern stamped everywhere. Countless full worlds, each different, each whole.

That also means there’s no privileged size where reality “really” happens. No floor underneath all the zooming in, no ceiling above all the zooming out. Every giant is someone else’s speck of dust, and every speck of dust is a giant to whatever’s smaller still inside it, forever, in both directions. Not a ladder with a bottom rung. A spiral with no bottom at all — every turn a full world, no turn more real than any other.

꩜ Closing Recap

Reality is a loop, not a line.
Space and matter mirror each other.
Every particle may carry its own whole world, not a copy of one master pattern.
The Big Bang isn’t finished. It’s still happening, everywhere, now.
Time may not flow — it may simply be, all at once, and we walk through it one frame at a time.
Awareness is not manufactured by the brain, but tuned into by it.
Everything and nothing collapse into the same equilibrium — and you are that equilibrium, aware of itself.

As above, so below. As within, so without. No floor. No ceiling. Just the spiral, turning.
