In another life, I was a Chicken Tender.
I had full intentions of turning the meat birds… well.. to meat. Franklin’s breed, my pet/son, is genetically modified to grow larger than what’s normal due to factory farming to kill between 6-8 weeks old. But I obviously didn’t go through with it.
So, Franklin lived out the most decent life he could with his feet problems, until one night on the cusp of sunset… very dark..
I was going out to shut-in the flock, but I had forgot my phone flash light. That 30-45 second walk back outside from going in… was plenty for a raccoon to shred him up.
I thought he was dead, as he was completely limp, bleeding, and his back.. featherless and fillet’ed… I inspected him for a bit and pet his head, then I placed him inside my greenhouse tent because I wasn’t about to dig a hole, with a raccoon on loose, in the dark. No thanks.
So when I went out the next morning to handle business… I lifted the tent.. and I was APPALLED. He was gasping for breath. I felt waves of confusion and complete remorse because I could have been loving on him all night but I thought he was DEAD.
I got an emergency vet to put him down that day, and since this was during covid, I wasn’t allowed to be with him. There was nothing they could do because his wounds were so deep, and he was so fat, that they would never heal correctly. At least that’s the short story of what the vet told.
And that’s my traumatic story about my favorite pet chicken no-body asked for.
