
Causation is the question:
“Why did this happen, rather than something else?”
Or deeper:
“What makes one state of reality give rise to another?”
At the surface, causation looks simple:
A match strikes → flame appears.
A wound happens → blood flows.
A thought forms → a choice follows.
A seed is planted → a tree grows.
But “cause” is not just one thing.
It is a whole architecture.

A cause is whatever contributes to the existence, change, movement, form, or behavior of something else.

A plant does not grow because of “the seed” alone.
It grows because of:

These get blurred constantly.
A cause is something that helps produce an outcome.
A condition is something that must be present for the outcome to be possible.

The dead leaves are fuel.
The lightning strike is the trigger.
The fire is the effect.
So did lightning “cause” the fire?
Yes.
But only because the field was already prepared.
This is huge spiritually, psychologically, biologically, socially, everything.
A person “snapping” is rarely caused by one moment.
That moment is often just the match.
Their forest was already dry.

꩜ Aristotle’s Four Causes
Aristotle saw that “why” has multiple layers. So he broke causation into four different questions.
1. Material Cause
What is it made of?
A statue is caused by marble.
A body is caused by flesh, bone, blood, cells.
A blog post is caused by language, memory, thought, digital code.
Material cause is the substance.
The “stuff.”
2. Formal Cause
What shape, pattern, or structure makes it what it is?
A cup is not just ceramic. It has “cupness”: hollow form, container shape, usable structure.
A human is not just atoms. A corpse has atoms too. The living form, organization, and pattern matter.
Formal cause is the blueprint.
The arrangement.
The code.
3. Efficient Cause
What directly made it happen?
This is what modern people usually mean by “cause.”
The sculptor made the statue.
The fire burned the wood.
The hand pushed the cup.
The enzyme catalyzed the reaction.
Efficient cause is the agent or mechanism of change.
The mover.
4. Final Cause
What is it for? Toward what end does it move?
A knife is for cutting.
An acorn tends toward becoming an oak.
An eye is for seeing.
A ritual may be for transformation.
Final cause is purpose, function, telos.
The direction.
Modern science often avoids final causes because “purpose” can get messy. But biology still quietly uses it all the time when it says hearts are “for” pumping blood or wings are “for” flight.
So Aristotle’s full causation map is:
Matter + Form + Mechanism + Purpose
Or in my language:
Substance + Pattern + Activation + Direction

꩜ Modern scientific causation
Science usually focuses on efficient causation:
What mechanism produces the effect?
For example:
virus → infection
gravity → falling
mutation → altered trait
heat → expansion
neural firing → muscle movement
Science wants causes that are observable, testable, repeatable, and measurable.
But even science does not always mean “one thing caused another.”
It often means:
When conditions X are present, outcome Y becomes more likely or reliably follows.
This is why modern causation often becomes probabilistic.
Smoking does not guarantee lung cancer.
Not smoking does not guarantee no lung cancer.
But smoking increases causal risk.
So causation can be deterministic or probabilistic.

Deterministic causation means:
Given the exact same conditions, the exact same effect must follow.
Like:
• 2 + 2 = 4

Reality as machine.
Input → output.
But this gets complicated fast because most real systems are not isolated. They are tangled, nonlinear, chaotic, recursive.

Probabilistic causation means:
A cause increases the likelihood of an effect without guaranteeing it.
Example:
Stress increases the likelihood of illness.

Certain genes increase the likelihood of certain traits.
This is more realistic for biology, psychology, weather, society, quantum physics, and complex systems.
The cause is not a command.
It is a pressure.
A weighting.
A bend in the field.

This is where causation gets sharper.
A necessary cause must be present for something to happen.

In reality, few things are purely sufficient because most events need multiple conditions.
A spark is not sufficient for fire if there is no fuel.
Fuel is not sufficient if there is no ignition.
Oxygen is not sufficient if there is nothing to burn.
But together:
oxygen + fuel + heat = fire
This is causal assembly.
The event emerges when the pattern is complete.

Linear causation says:
A causes B.
Network causation says:
A, B, C, D, and E interact until F emerges.
Most of reality is network causation.

• memories
• environment
• relationship dynamics
• nervous system state
• meaning-making
• weather
• money stress
• body pain
• old trauma
• current sensory input
So instead of:
“Why do I feel this way?”
The better question is:
“What field of causes is producing this state?”
That question is much more powerful.

This is one of the coolest parts.
Upward causation means smaller parts create larger wholes.
Atoms → molecules → cells → organs → organisms → societies

A society shapes individual behavior.
A body regulates cells.
A belief changes nervous system chemistry.
A story changes action.
A culture changes desire.
So causation does not only move bottom-up.
It also moves top-down.
The whole shapes the parts that created it.
That is recursive reality.
The mirror loops back.

So causation may not be “inside” time in the simple way we think.

Correlation means two things happen together.

If everything has a cause, what caused the first cause?
This leads to several possibilities:
- There is a first cause, uncaused by anything else.

- Reality is circular or recursive.
- Cause and effect are human categories imposed on something deeper.
- Existence is self-grounding.

Maybe causation does not begin as a line.
