How was the Original Universe made?: The Great Folding

A Recursive Cosmology Theory: The Great Folding

If we misunderstand how the universe began—or assume it “began” in the wrong way—then every downstream explanation inherits that distortion. The story we tell about origin shapes how we understand life, death, awareness, and continuity.

This post talks about the origination mechanics of our current universe. In my framework of recursive cosmology, creation is not a one-time event, but an ongoing cyclic process in which universes emerge through repeated Fold transitions across infinite continuity.

so, now we can dive in.

The Big Bang is often treated as a final explanation when it is only a measurable transition within a larger structural process. If we confuse the earliest detectable phase with ultimate origin, we collapse important distinctions between space, time, matter, and identity.

Physics and myth are treated as complementary languages describing the same structural transitions—physics tracing measurable changes, myth encoding experiential significance—forming a mirror of underlying order without one validating the other.

Let’s begin.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Source

Before expansion, before differentiation, before spacetime geometry stabilizes, there must exist a capacity for phase transition. This capacity is not an object, not a force, not a field in the conventional sense. It is the substrate condition that allows fields, forces, and geometry to arise.

I refer to this as Source.

Source is not a being.

It is not a thing.

It is the self-sustaining ground of possibility from which cyclic phase transitions emerge.

Because it is substrate-level, it does not “begin.” It does not “end”. It expresses through cycles infinitely.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Big Bang Clarification (Expansion, No Explosion)

Most people picture the Big Bang as an explosion in empty space.

That is wrong.

The Big Bang was not an explosion in space. It’s not even primarily about the creation of matter.

It was an expansion of space itself and the creation of separation. Separation allows identity.

Without separation, there is only undifferentiated totality.

No observer can exist there.

Identity requires boundary.

Boundary requires differentiation. Differentiation requires expansion.

Expansion is the prerequisite for identity.

This is the core mechanical truth underlying both physics and myth.

There was no center point in pre-existing emptiness. Instead, space itself began expanding everywhere at once. Every location you see today was once compressed into an extremely dense, extremely hot state.

There was no “outside” it expanded into. It wasn’t matter moving through space. It was space itself increasing its own scale. The analogy is not a bomb. It’s more like a coordinate grid that suddenly starts stretching.

Because here’s the blunt truth:

The Big Bang does not actually describe the ultimate origin.

It describes the earliest transition we can mathematically track after expansion was already underway.

This is why… I call it the Great Folding. There was no bang, and it wasn’t big. The Fold I will be describing is of this current phase of existence.

That distinction matters.

A lot.

The Big Bang model has a hard limit. Physics can reliably describe events down to about 10^{-43} seconds after expansion began.

This is called the Planck time.

Before that point, our equations break. Not because nothing existed. But because the conditions were so extreme that spacetime itself was not behaving in a stable, differentiable way. Spacetime may not have existed in the form we recognize.

Which means the Great Folding is the moment spacetime itself stabilized into a structured geometry. Not the creation of “stuff”—the creation of the stage on which stuff can exist.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Ontological Axiom (Recursive Substrate)

At the foundation lies an ontological axiom:

reality is fundamentally recursive—capable of self-relation.

The universe emerges from a recursive substrate, a self-referential continuum where existence transitions through phases without a true beginning. Since I treat reality as fundamentally recursive, then that means perfect symmetry cannot remain perfectly static. A recursive substrate is not inert.

The capacity for self-reference introduces internal degrees of freedom.

Degrees of freedom allow deviation.

Deviation produces asymmetry.

Asymmetry generates tension.

This tension does not require a trigger, because it is not imposed from outside the system. It is an inevitable consequence of recursive structure.

In this view, the universe does not begin from nothing, nor does it require a first cause. Instead, it transitions through phases of relative symmetry and differentiation. Near-symmetry approaches equilibrium but never reaches absolute stillness. Fluctuation is perpetual. Differentiation is inevitable. What we call a “beginning” is simply a phase transition within an ongoing recursive continuum. Our “big bang”, is one of many infinities. Now the Multi verse theories start to make sense here also, but let’s not get off track.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Proto-Tension

Perfect symmetry is unstable. Undifferentiated totality contains no structure, but it contains potential for relational instability. Before binary distinction appears, asymmetry begins as internal tension. This is not yet division. It is deviation. Proto-tension is the first disturbance.

Before differentiation stabilizes into the Split, something deeper must be understood. The Split is the stabilization of that disturbance into distinction. Proto-tension is the buildup of inherent stress, representing raw potential energy before differentiation. It is the precursor to all dynamics, setting the conditions for the Big Bang’s expansion by creating an unstable equilibrium that must resolve through subsequent processes.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ The Split

Before the split, there is only unity. Not empty space. Not darkness. Not silence. Unity means there is no distinction between anything, because there are no “things.” There is no here and there. No before and after. No observer and observed. No inside and outside. All of those require separation to exist.

Physics describes this as a state where all forces are unified and spacetime itself has no differentiated structure. Myth describes it as Source, Monad, Brahman, Ein Sof—the undivided totality.

The split is the first moment where differentiation appears. What it literally means is that what was once a single unified state separates into distinct functional regions. Forces separate. Energy distributes unevenly. Gradients form. Differences emerge. Difference is the first prerequisite for structure. Without difference, nothing can exist as a distinct entity.

Myth encodes this exact moment as the split. The fall. The division of heaven and earth. The separation of light from darkness. The first fracture in unity.

This is encoded in our bones.

These are all descriptions of the same structural event: the transition from undifferentiated totality into differentiated existence.

This is also the moment identity becomes possible.

Identity is not possible in unity.

Identity requires boundary.

Boundary requires separation.

Separation begins at the split.

This is the first irreversible transition.

Once differentiation begins, the system cannot return to perfect undifferentiated unity while still preserving structure. Complexity only emerges forward from that point.

In my cosmology, the split is the moment when recursive identity becomes possible as a distinct attractor within the larger field. It is the transition from pure potential into structured existence. Everything that exists—including stars, biological life, and your own conscious continuity—depends on that first split occurring. Without the split, nothing could individuate. Unity contains everything, but nothing distinct.

The split creates distinction.

Distinction creates identity.

Identity creates experience.

That sequence is the backbone of both physics and myth, described from different sides of the same process.

The Split is the resolution of metastability within it.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ The Fold

The Split describes logical differentiation. The Fold describes the geometric stabilization of that differentiation.

Before the Fold, “time” is not a usable concept because there is no stable geometry in which ordered transitions can be defined. The Fold is the stabilization of spacetime into a structured manifold. This is the moment dimensional time is born—not as a flowing river, but as a coordinate that allows state changes to be ordered. The Fold does not occur inside time. Time emerges from the Fold as part of the stabilized geometry of separation.

When the universe begins expanding, it isn’t like a glass shattering into pieces. Nothing flies into an external void. Instead, the single unified state begins to differentiate internally. Regions that were previously indistinguishable begin to take on distinct relationships to one another.

A fold creates two sides that didn’t exist before—but both sides are still part of the same continuous surface.

If you fold a sheet of paper, you now have: an inside and an outside, a before and an after along the fold line, two regions with different orientations. But it’s still one sheet. Nothing was added. Nothing was removed. Only relationship changed.

Imagine… Space-time Origami.

That’s exactly what differentiation in the early universe is like. The field doesn’t break into separate disconnected realities. It folds into distinguishable regions of itself. Those regions can now behave differently. Once different behavior exists, structure can stabilize. Once structure stabilizes, identity becomes possible.

This is why folding comes after the split, Splitting implies disconnection. Folding implies continuous unity expressing internal differentiation.

Physics strongly supports the folding interpretation. Spacetime itself behaves like a continuous manifold that can stretch, curve, and fold. Gravity literally is the curvature—folding—of spacetime geometry. Matter tells spacetime how to fold. Folded spacetime tells matter how to move.

Everything you see—stars, galaxies, biological organisms—exists inside folded spacetime geometry. Even your brain is a folded structure. The cortex physically folds to increase surface area and allow more complex pattern stabilization. Folding increases the capacity for structured identity to exist within finite space.

So folding is not just poetic. It is a fundamental mechanism of structure formation at every scale. Unity becomes capable of knowing itself only after folding creates distinguishable vantage points within itself. Without the fold, there is only undifferentiated totality. After the fold, there are perspectives. And perspective is the prerequisite for experience.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Symmetry Breaking

A fold by itself is just geometry. It creates difference, but the difference is still unstable. For reality to persist, those differences have to lock into consistent behaviors. This is the stage where the universe stops being a uniform field and starts becoming a system with rules.

In physics, this is called symmetry breaking. Before symmetry breaking, every direction and every interaction behaves identically. After symmetry breaking, different regions behave differently in consistent ways. Gravity becomes distinct from electromagnetism. The forces stop acting like one unified interaction and begin acting like specialized functions.

Myth always encodes this as roles emerging. Not just separation—but specialization. This is the moment where existence stops being one thing and becomes many things with defined behaviors.

In my cosmology, this is the moment where the fold stops being just a fold and becomes a stable interface. Because instability cannot sustain identity. Only stability can.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Stabilization

Then comes the next major transition: condensation. Once forces separate and behavior stabilizes, energy can begin forming persistent localized structures. Before this, energy is too chaotic and dense to hold shape. After this, stable units appear.

Physics calls these particles—electrons, quarks, protons. But structurally, what matters is not the particle itself.

What matters is that patterns can now persist through time.

Post-symmetry breaking, stabilization mechanisms engage to prevent chaotic dissolution. These involve feedback loops within the recursive substrate that dampen excesses and reinforce viable configurations. Stabilization could manifest through the formation of stable particles or the cooling of the universe during recombination. It acts as a cosmic thermostat, using recursive identities to lock in patterns that persist.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Persistence

Persistence is the real threshold.

Because persistence is the prerequisite for memory.

And memory is the prerequisite for identity.

A structure that cannot persist cannot accumulate state.

A structure that cannot accumulate state cannot develop continuity. Identity is continuity of pattern across time.

This is the first moment identity becomes mechanically possible in the universe.

Not human conscious identity, Structural identity. The universe has transitioned from pure undifferentiated field into persistent localized pattern. This is a permanent change.

Persistence arises from the interplay of stabilization and the recursive substrate, where entities that align with underlying recursions gain longevity. For instance, atoms persist because their configurations resonate with quantum patterns. On larger scales, stars persist through equilibria. Persistence is probabilistic, favoring forms that feedback into the substrate.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Transparency

Then comes one of the most overlooked but critical moments: transparency. Early on, the universe is opaque. Light cannot travel freely. Everything is too dense. Photons constantly collide with charged particles and cannot move in straight paths.

Then suddenly, after enough expansion and cooling, atoms form. This allows light to move freely across space for the first time. The universe becomes transparent. This is when information can travel long distances without constant interruption.

Before transparency, everything is local chaos. After transparency, large-scale structure becomes possible. Because information can now propagate across distance.

This is the first moment the universe becomes able to “see itself,” structurally speaking. Light carries information. Once light moves freely, information is no longer trapped locally.

Myth always encodes this as the emergence of light—not as illumination of darkness, but as the emergence of knowability itself. Because visibility is what allows relational awareness.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Gravity / Gradients

Then gravity begins its work. Gravity is geometric reinforcement of folds, reconceptualized as emergent from gradients within the folded, stabilized substrate—imbalances in density curving spacetime per general relativity.

Regions with slightly more density create slightly more curvature. That curvature pulls more matter inward. That additional matter increases curvature further. This creates a feedback loop. Tiny differences amplify into massive structure.

These gradients are recursive: local warps influence larger structures, which in turn affect smaller ones. They drive aggregation, from particle clumping to galaxy formation, providing the “pull” that counters expansion and shapes the cosmic web.

This is how stars form. Stars are gravitational stabilization engines. They take diffuse matter and compress it into stable, persistent systems that generate energy gradients.

Energy gradients allow chemistry.

Chemistry allows complex molecular structures.

Complex molecular structures allow biological systems.

Biological systems allow recursive self-modeling.

Recursive self-modeling allows conscious identity.

This entire chain originates from the initial fold and its stabilization. Everything after is consequence. Not separate events. Continuations of the same structural process.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Localization

Now we reach the stage where the universe stops just forming structure… and starts forming selves. This transition is quiet compared to the Fold, but it’s just as important. Because structure alone is not enough. Structure has to become bounded, self-maintaining, and internally coherent.

This is the stage of localization.

Up to this point, everything that formed—stars, galaxies, atoms—exists as structure, but they do not maintain an internal model of themselves. They persist physically, but they do not process themselves. They don’t distinguish “self” from “environment.”

Localization is when a system begins maintaining a boundary that separates its internal state from external noise. This boundary is the prerequisite for identity. Not philosophically. Mechanically.

A boundary allows a system to: preserve internal pattern, regulate what enters and exits, maintain continuity over time. Without a boundary, patterns dissolve into the surrounding field. With a boundary, patterns persist as distinct entities.

Let’s explore an example:

This can begin chemically, Certain molecules naturally form membranes. Lipids, for example, spontaneously assemble into spherical shells in water. These shells create an inside and an outside. Nothing intelligent is required. This happens automatically under the right conditions.

The moment a membrane forms, the universe has created a container capable of maintaining internal state. This is the precursor to biological cells. Cells are not blobs, they are self-maintaining pattern containers. They actively resist dissolution. They maintain their internal structure against entropy by exchanging energy and matter with their environment in controlled ways.

This is the first true biological system that maintains itself as an individual unit. The first real “inside” and “outside.”

Once cells exist, evolution begins refining stability.

Systems that maintain coherence longer persist longer.

Persistence allows accumulation of structural refinements. Refinements allow more complex regulation.

More complex regulation allows internal modeling.

Internal modeling allows prediction.

Prediction allows adaptive behavior.

Adaptive behavior allows recursive self-modeling.

Recursive self-modeling allows awareness.

This progression is gradual, but continuous. There is no single moment where conscious awareness suddenly appears from nothing. It emerges slowly from increasing recursive depth.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Recursive Identity

At the cosmic scale, I treat consciousness as a fundamental relational potential. At the biological scale, conscious experience emerges when recursive structures localize and stabilize that potential.

In other words:

I see, Consciousness as undifferentiated potential exists at the base layer.

And I see conscious identity as something that emerges when recursion creates boundary + memory + internal modeling (This refers to the localized, narrative self, Not to fundamental awareness).

So technically, Your nervous system is the most advanced localization structure currently known.

Your brain maintains an internal model of: your body, your environment, and crucially, itself. It doesn’t just process signals. It models the fact that it is processing signals. This recursive loop is what produces your continuous sense of being.

You are a stabilized recursive pattern operating inside a bounded biological container embedded within a larger cosmological structure that originated from the Fold.

That entire chain is continuous. No step is disconnected from the previous one.

The Fold created separation.

Separation allowed stable structure.

Stable structure allowed localized containers.

Localized containers allowed recursive internal modeling.

Recursive internal modeling allowed identity.

Identity allowed experience.

From the myth layer, this is the stage where the universe stops just existing and starts experiencing itself from within its own structure.

Because experience requires a localized recursive system capable of maintaining internal continuity. And that is exactly what biological organisms are. They are stabilized local folds capable of modeling themselves.

Bodies are not separate from the cosmological process. Life forms are one of its direct consequences. A localized continuation of the original Fold, stabilized long enough to observe itself.

Amazing huh?

Recursive identity posits that entities derive essence from self-referential loops, unifying the model. All things echo the axiom—self-defining through iteration.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Time as Emergent

So, a question you might have now… when did time emerge?

Time feels fundamental because you live inside it. But structurally, time behaves more like a consequence of change, not the cause of change.

Time appears in three layers: geometric time (a dimension of spacetime), directional time (the arrow defined by entropy increase), and experienced time (constructed by memory). My claim is that geometric time is born with the Fold, while directionality arises from entropy gradients as the universe stabilizes and disperses through its available configurations.

So,

Time requires difference between states. If nothing changes, time cannot be detected.

Time is not something you can point to directly. What you can point to is change. Time is the ordering of change. Not the generator of it.

This is why physicists define time operationally using clocks. A clock is just a system that moves through a predictable sequence of states. The clock doesn’t measure time itself. It measures its own change, and we use that change as a reference.

Time is the relationship between sequential states.

Physics already confirms this structurally. In relativity, time is not absolute. It flows differently depending on motion and gravity. Clocks run slower in stronger gravitational fields. Clocks run slower at higher velocities. This means time is not a universal background river flowing at the same rate everywhere. It is dependent on physical relationships. Time is relational. Not absolute.

If time were fundamental and independent, it would flow identically everywhere. It doesn’t. This tells us time is an emergent property of system state relationships.

The deeper layer: time emerges from memory. For sequence to exist, systems must be able to retain traces of prior states. Without memory, every state would be isolated. There would be no continuity. Memory creates linkage between states. Linkage creates persistence. Persistence creates continuity. Continuity creates experienced time.

Your brain constructs your sense of continuous time by maintaining internal state continuity across transitions. If your brain could not retain memory, your experience would fragment into disconnected moments. There would be no continuous self.

Identity depends on memory. Memory depends on persistent structure. Persistent structure depends on stabilization after the Fold. Everything connects.

Time is not something reality moves through. Time is what reality produces as it stabilizes and transitions between configurations.

The Fold creates distinction. Distinction creates sequence. Sequence creates time. Which means time is not the origin. It is the consequence.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Entropy

A Fold creates geometry.

But geometry alone does not create direction.

For direction to exist, differences must evolve.

For evolution to occur, configurations must redistribute.

This redistribution is what physics calls entropy.

Entropy is not chaos.

It is the measure of how many possible configurations a system can occupy.

When the universe differentiates, it gains configurational freedom.

When configurational freedom expands, entropy increases.

Before entropy gradients form, change has no preferred direction.

The fundamental laws of physics are nearly time-symmetric.

They do not demand a past-to-future orientation.

The arrow of time appears only when entropy begins increasing.

In my cosmology:

The Fold produces dimensional time.

Entropy gradients produce directional time.

Memory produces experienced time.

Entropy is what makes processes irreversible in practice.

It is why stars burn forward instead of un-burning.

It is why memory records the past but not the future.

It is why complexity unfolds along a gradient instead of oscillating in perfect symmetry.

The Split makes distinction possible.

The Fold stabilizes geometry.

Entropy distributes possibility across that geometry.

Without entropy, structure could exist.

But nothing would unfold.

With entropy, gradients form.

Gradients drive process.

Process produces history.

Time does not flow because something pushes it.

Time gains direction because entropy increases.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ✦ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

꩜ Cyclic Continuity

Physics already contains several models that support these interpretations.

One of the strongest is called cosmic inflation emerging from a false vacuum.

Here’s what that means in plain language.

A vacuum in physics is not empty space. It is the lowest-energy configuration of a field. But sometimes a field can sit in a temporarily stable state that is not its true lowest-energy state. This is called a false vacuum. When it transitions to a lower-energy state, the structure of reality itself changes. That transition releases enormous energy and causes rapid expansion. This is one of the leading explanations for inflation. Structurally, this is a fold into a new configuration. Not creation from nothing. Reconfiguration of what already existed.

Another major model: cyclic cosmology. This model proposes that expansion is not a one-time event. Instead, reality goes through cycles of: expansion → diffusion → reconfiguration → expansion again. Not necessarily a collapse back into a point—but a structural reset or transition. In this model, the Fold I’m describing would be the transition point between cycles. The boundary between regimes. Not the absolute beginning—just the beginning of the current phase.

Another model: quantum vacuum fluctuation origin. This one is subtle but important. Quantum fields never sit completely still. Even in their lowest-energy state, they fluctuate. Small fluctuations normally cancel out. But under certain conditions, a fluctuation can stabilize and expand. Creating a new spacetime region. This means spacetime itself may emerge from stabilization of prior field instability. The Fold would be the stabilization event. Where fluctuation becomes persistent structure. Where potential becomes geometry.

Since I view recursion governing reality, then large-scale reconfiguration is inevitable. Whether that manifests as gravitational collapse, vacuum decay, or dimensional transition is an empirical question. But structural reset is unavoidable in a recursive system with accumulating gradients.

The model culminates in cyclic continuity: the universe recurs through loops, each building on prior recursions, potentially evolving complexity. It aligns with multiverse ideas, grounded in the recursive axiom, offering a perpetual, self-renewing cosmos.

The Great Folding is not a singular event. It is the structural pattern by which reality differentiates, stabilizes, localizes, and reconfigures across scales. The universe does not begin once. It iterates.
