Knowledge is not just an individual cognitive achievement.
It is a social infrastructure.
Truth in large societies depends on systems like:

- free exchange of ideas
If those structures function well, knowledge accumulates.
If they break down, misinformation spreads and rational decision-making collapses.

This means we can now say,
Social epistemology is the study of:
how social structures influence what people believe and what societies come to treat as knowledge.
It examines the epistemic consequences of communication, authority, institutions, and collective reasoning.
Some thinkers extend social epistemology into a systems-level model of civilization itself.
Instead of asking:
“How does a single mind know something?”
It asks:
“How does a civilization know anything at all?”
A civilization “knows” things through layers of cognitive infrastructure. Knowledge does not sit inside one person. It lives in networks.
Think of four main layers.
First: individual cognition.
Every piece of knowledge still begins in a mind. Someone observes something, runs an experiment, notices a pattern, or forms a hypothesis. Individual thinkers generate raw insights.
Second: communication.
Ideas only become social knowledge when they are shared. Language, writing, diagrams, mathematics, and digital media allow one mind to transfer information into another. Without communication, discoveries die with the person who had them.
Third: verification systems.
Civilizations create structures to test claims. These include peer review, replication of experiments, debate, journalism, law courts, and academic criticism. These systems attempt to filter errors and bias. They are imperfect, but they act as error-correction mechanisms.
Fourth: memory storage.
Knowledge must persist beyond a single generation. Books, libraries, archives, databases, and now the internet function as external memory. This is sometimes called cultural memory. Without it, civilization would reset every few decades.
Put those together and you get something interesting:
• Civilization has perception (research)
• communication (information flow)
• error correction (criticism and verification)
• memory (records and archives)
Those are the same basic components as a mind.
Which leads to the deeper observation many philosophers and scientists have made:
Human societies behave like distributed cognitive systems.
No single person knows everything. But the network does.

The answer depends on how strictly you define that phrase.
In the mystical sense—one literal shared mind connecting everyone—there is no scientific evidence for that.
But in a structural sense, something very similar exists.
Sociologists call it collective knowledge or distributed cognition. Anthropologists call it cultural cognition. Philosophers call it social epistemic systems.
All of these describe the same phenomenon:
Knowledge emerges from interacting minds rather than isolated ones.
Examples are everywhere.
Modern medicine exists because thousands of researchers contribute pieces of knowledge over decades. No single doctor understands the entire system, yet the network of expertise functions as a unified knowledge engine.
The same thing happens with technology, law, engineering, and science.
Civilization becomes a superorganism of reasoning.
Individuals supply observations and ideas.
Institutions organize and test them.
Records preserve them.
New generations build on them.
Over time the system accumulates knowledge that no individual mind could ever hold.
