What is Spirituality?

When I hear the word spirituality, I know what most people probably imagine… Crystals. Tarot cards. Astrology. Love and light…or bullshit!

But in reality, let’s break it down to the core.

This is what I’ve gathered from watching society so far and what they “think”.

Spirituality to the masses is a broad and multifaceted concept that encompasses a deep, personal connection to something greater than oneself. It’s usually connected to matters of the soul, the search for meaning, and a sense of purpose in life.

Key traits I’ve identified in spirituality on a very surface level:

Connection to the Divine: Many people view spirituality as a way to connect with a higher power or a transcendent reality. This can take the form of a belief in God, gods, the universe, or a higher consciousness.

Inner Peace and Fulfillment: Spirituality often involves seeking inner peace, contentment, and a sense of fulfillment that goes beyond material possessions or external achievements. It’s about finding meaning in life and feeling at peace with oneself.

Moral and Ethical Values: Spiritual beliefs often influence one’s moral and ethical values. They can guide decisions and actions based on principles like compassion, kindness, and empathy.

Self-Discovery: Spirituality can be a path of self-discovery and personal growth. It may involve practices such as meditation, introspection, or mindfulness to better understand one’s inner self.

Connection to Others: Spirituality can also involve a sense of interconnectedness with other people, nature, and the world at large. It often emphasizes empathy and love for all living beings.

Religious and Non-Religious: Spirituality is not limited to organized religion. It can be expressed within the context of religious faith, but it’s also important to recognize that many people consider themselves spiritual without adhering to any specific religious tradition.

Quest for Transcendence: Some seek spiritual experiences or moments of transcendence, where they feel connected to something beyond the everyday, a sense of the sacred, or a glimpse into a deeper reality.

Personal Journey: Spirituality is a highly personal journey. What is considered a spiritual experience or practice can vary widely from person to person. It’s often about finding one’s own path and understanding of the spiritual dimension of life.

Spirituality is a deeply individual and diverse concept, and it can be a source of strength, comfort, and guidance for many people in different ways and forms.

Now… to the core.

What is Spirituality?

Truthfully?

The word’s been passed around so much, it’s begun to feel slippery. Everyone seems to have their own definition, and yet, most conversations around it feel vague or half-formed… filled with higher-self lingo, affirmations, and talk of “energy” without ever really asking: what does it all mean?

But really? TRUELY?

Spirituality is a direct relationship with reality’s deeper structure.

It’s not belief. It’s not practice. It just.. IS.

It’s what happens when something breaks through the surface of your life and whispers,

“There’s more.”

It begins with awareness… not of yourself, but of the pattern beneath the noise.

The feeling that time is folding.

Your Dreams.

The grief that teaches you something language never could.

The pull toward meaning in a meaningless system.

At its core, spirituality is an orientation, not a destination.

It’s you recognizing you are not your thoughts, your job, your story, or even your body.

But you are something ancient running through them.

A witness. A pulse. A thread.

True spirituality doesn’t require a temple.

It requires a fracture—then attention.

The moment something cracks (a heartbreak, a death, a vision, a knowing) and you don’t look away.

That’s where it begins.

Everything else… rituals, beliefs, deities, chakras, crystals, mantras… is optional. It doesn’t directly correlate to spirituality itself.

Spirituality doesn’t live in the tools.

It lives in the tuning.

To self.

To Source.

To the pulse beneath form.

This is act of awakening to self as a conscious awareness beyond conditioning. Assigning any act to spirituality is projecting conditioning.

It’s a way of experiencing life.

I’ve come to see spirituality as a kind of philosophical intimacy with existence, consciousness, god.. what ever you want to call it.

It’s way of tuning in to such a way that the ordinary begins to feel extraordinary… not because you’re escaping reality, but because you’re meeting it with reverence.

But that’s only one side of it. That’s what the love and lighters harp on about…

Because life isn’t just beautiful sunsets, quiet forests, or sacred stillness.

It’s also pain that splits you open.

It’s confusion, grief, rage, and the kind of loneliness that feels like it’ll never leave. The kind that puts those unspeakable thoughts in your head.

Spirituality doesn’t erase that, it includes it. That, is not separate.

Sometimes, life is not romantic.

Sometimes, there is no silver lining.. just survival. And a piss poor time… nothing to sugar coat.

And yet, even there… something sacred exists.

Not in the suffering itself, but in your witnessing of it.

In your choice to keep breathing through it.

In the moments when you refuse to numb out, even when it hurts.

That, too, is spirituality.

It’s not about making everything feel extraordinary… it’s about staying with life, as it is. Through it all.

It’s learning to hold beauty and brutality in the same breath.

To let the darkness teach you without defining you.

So maybe spirituality isn’t just about romanticizing life…

Maybe it’s about respecting it, all of it.

Even the parts you’d rather forget.

Even the moments that nearly broke you.

Because something in you stayed.

And that something… is sacred.

Spirituality isn’t just an experience though, that experience is also a tool which works in a way to help you stay grounded and connected in life. It’s not going to fix yourself, or change anything, but you will be more deeply rooted in a directional sense.

It’s the practice of finding meaning where there isn’t clarity yet.

It’s what lets you rebuild after you’ve been shattered.

It gives shape to the invisible strength you carry

It is also a space for things that make absolutely no sense, and no need for immediate answers.

So, in a reality where “spirituality” is slapped on everything from skincare to sound baths, it’s lost its depth and true meaning.

So now…

let’s talk about what spirituality is not:

It is not a performance.

Spirituality doesn’t require you to look a certain way, speak in poetic metaphors, or surround yourself with Props. Incense and crystals (unless you want to). It’s not about aesthetics. it’s about authenticity. If it’s only happening for show, it’s not spiritual. It’s branding.

It is not always peaceful.

True spirituality doesn’t mean you’re calm and smiling all the time. Sometimes it brings up grief, anger, and confusion. Sometimes you feel worse before you feel better. Spirituality can be messy, raw, and deeply uncomfortable. That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong—it means you’re going deeper.

It is not a shortcut.

Spirituality isn’t a bypass button for hard work, healing, or personal responsibility. It won’t magically solve all your problems or elevate you above pain. In fact, it’ll often lead you straight into the very things you’ve been avoiding—so you can actually move through them, not around them.

It is not a set of rules.

There is no single right way to be spiritual. You don’t have to follow a certain practice, believe in a specific deity, or subscribe to someone else’s truth. Spirituality is personal. What awakens your soul might not touch someone else’s.. and that’s okay. that’s the damn point.

It is not a hierarchy.

No one is more “spiritual” than someone else because they meditate more, eat cleaner, or use fancier words. Spirituality is not a competition. It’s not about being “above” others—it’s about being with life in a real and honest way. And that has no correlation to aesthetics.

It is not avoidance.

Spirituality isn’t about rising above everything. It’s about being present with it. It’s not love and light only.. It’s shadow and silence and learning how to hold both without flinching.

The most important thing about spiritually is..

You don’t have to get it right.

You just have to pay attention 𓂀
